Pace Running Lesson Learned

Heat + hills + sticking with a predetermined pace = going too hard.

I'm going to amend (again) my new workout to be based off the chart below and my HR monitor instead of toting that GPS around running at a steady speed with no consideration to the change in elevation.

My Monday 4 mile run will be at 85% HR. Wednesday will be one mile at 75% HR followed by speedwork and finally by another mile at 75% HR. Saturday will be 45 minutes at 80% HR. I'll track my times for each 4 mile run to chart what will hopefully be an improvement over a few months.

Jason's Heart Chart

100 % HR = 212
95 % HR = 202
90 % HR = 191
85 % HR = 181
80 % HR = 170
75 % HR = 159

Maybe I should change the name of this blog... seems to be about running now and I don't know how I feel about that :)

Think of it as a transition. Have you seen 212 bpm? My Polar tops out 223 bpm when under high voltage lines. Jason "High Voltage" Amick

I have seen a 212, no wires present, at the top of the midlands climb. I saw a 209 in my 5k last may at the top of a hill. I saw a 203 last night at the top of a hill trying to keep my pace. The weird thing is, 198 and 208 don't feel very different... they suck equally :)

My sigma does something similar to your polar... There was a spot on the long way home Monty and I use to take that would send my "HR" around 300 for some reason.

You got one strong ticker, I think I would pass out or my heart would explode that high. I was about to drop when I saw a 190 come across mine on the spidy inner loop climb. The "High Voltage" does sound good, id go with it, coming from the bushwacker it could be worse :)

Jim, think of it this way... you earned "bushwacker". I can't help it my heart will beat faster than some of you guys. I secretly think you're all just holding back ;)
