Kiwanis 5k Report

I did not meet all my goals for this race, but it was a good workout and training race. I could not get my heart rate up where I wanted it on the last mile and really felt the muggy hills. Congrats to Monty and Toby. Monty came in second in our age group and Tobias took home first in our age group. I came in 4th in the 30-34 group with a 24:29, beating my first flatter 5k by a few seconds. The course record was set with a 19.14, so it's a pretty slow course even for the faster folks.

I feel like I held back too much again in this race. I had way too much gas in the tank and my sprint was able to be run hard. I don't even feel fatigued as I type the an hour after the race. My first mile was a 7:00 pace at 91% average heart rate. My second was run at 94%. My plan fell apart with mile three. I just could not push my HR up passed 200 today.

I guess it's more of the same for a few months to try to get a faster 5k by December. I'm really going to work on aerobic base and tempo running. I have short distance speed, but no endurance to hold it.

Update: I think they mixed up my time with the 13 year old I out sprinted at the end :) I beat the little guy after closing a 20 yard gap on him. He was a pretty strong runner. I guess I had a 24:27? This was not a chip timed race. The guy that won this race ran in my first 5k also. He was a minute faster in the Riverfest 5k. That makes me feel pretty good since I beat my Riverfest time by a few seconds. I can assume that I've taken approximately 1 minute off my first 5k.

19:14 course record. Good job today on the run.
