Bike to Work Week

It's Bike to Work Week again. I've seen more cyclists on the road. The funny thing is, I call myself a cyclist and have yet to actually bike to work this week. The forecast for 30 to 40 mph wind gusts on Monday had me in the car. I've been there and done that... I also decided not to ever do that again. Headwinds suck, tailwinds rock... being blown into traffic by a 40mph crosswind will ruin your day. I took Tuesday off to watch my daughter. It's hard to bike to work when you don't go to work. Today I needed the car to run errands during lunch and after work. So at the midpoint in the week I am officially 0 for 3. I wanted to ride in tomorrow, but it's looking like an 80% chance of rain will keep me on the trainer all week. A weekend mountain bike race is on the horizon and I'll not risk a rainy day crash before a race.

I guess I should try to frame my lack of participation in a left wing, low carbon footprint 'Bike Event' in a more positive way. After all, I regularly ride to work on my bike when I can for fitness and pure enjoyment. I saw a statistic the other day that indicates I am one of the less than 1/2% of Americans that regularly travel to work on a bicycle. I ride because I want to and not because of western environmental guilt or the cost of a gallon of petrol. I should say that it's a protest that keeps me off my bike this week.

With that said, ride on my comrades... I'll spew copious amounts of CO2 into the air in attempt to 'offset' your 'offset' while on the trainer this evening. Seriously, I hope some of you stick it out and join myself and others for nonpolitical commuting to work the other 51 weeks out of the year.
